How RAG Makes Your Documents Searchable

How RAG Makes Your Documents Searchable

Imagine you have hundreds of pages of documents, notes, contracts, or PDFs. You know the information you’re looking for is in there somewhere, but where exactly? This is exactly where RAG technology comes into play.

What does RAG stand for?

RAG stands for “Retrieval-Augmented Generation”. The principle behind it is simple: Instead of answering your questions based on trained knowledge, AI first searches specific sources for relevant information. This is how specialized AI chat features are implemented, such as in current tax software.

You can think of it as a personal research assistant:

You ask a question → RAG finds the relevant text passages → the AI summarizes the information for you.

More Than Just Searching for Words

A traditional search in software typically works using keywords. For example, if you search for “notice period,” it finds document passages that contain exactly that term.

RAG goes a step further. The AI tries to understand what you actually mean.

For example, if you ask, “How long do I have to give notice to terminate this contract?”

During the search, the AI can also find text passages that may not even contain the word “terminate,” but instead refer to, for example, “termination of the contract” or a “three-month notice period.” To do this, the content is processed in such a way that its semantic meaning can be compared. This allows RAG to find not only identical words but also text that matches the context of your question.

How Noxidox Turns Documents into Knowledge

Before you can ask a question, your documents are divided into small sections of text. These sections are analyzed so that their meaning becomes comparable for the search. When you ask a question later, Noxidox searches for the sections that best match your question. Only this relevant information is then passed on to the AI. This has a key advantage: The AI doesn’t have to read all the documents. It receives exactly the information that’s relevant to your question.

RAG + Apple Intelligence

Noxidox combines this document search with Apple Intelligence’s on-device LLM. This allows you to search for relevant content and have it processed by the AI directly on your Apple device. Your documents don’t have to be transferred to an external AI service just so you can ask a question about them. This makes RAG not only practical but also particularly useful for documents you’d rather keep on your device.

Why RAG Is So Useful

RAG is changing the way we work with our documents. Instead of wondering: “Where did I read this information?” you can simply ask: “What do my documents say about this topic?” RAG thus combines traditional document search with the capabilities of modern AI.

And that’s exactly the idea behind Noxidox: Your documents remain your documents—but you can talk to them.
